Design a safer paraffin container and save thousands of children’s lives!

Have you ever wondered how you could improve the quality of life of millions of poor people, especially South Africans? How many opportunities do you get to use your creativity to protect millions of children from deadly harm? The Paraffin Safety Association of Southern Africa is proud to invite you to enter an international design competition to find a safer, durable and functional design for a paraffin (kerosene) container.

A total of ZAR100 000 prize money is on offer.

About the competition
Entrants are invited to design a state-of-the-art packaging and labelling combination that would be ideal for the purpose; combining the best of safety, environmental, economic and practical considerations. The winning design will be the one that, in the opinion of the panel of judges, has met the South African national safety standard criteria. It will have the best chance of consistently eliminating the necessity and danger of human contact, harm or ingestion. It will also minimize the potential for contamination with any other product throughout the life cycle of container (filling, distribution, purchasing, transport, storage and filling of the various types of appliances). The labelling must comply with the relevant global standards. It must identify and communicate clear and unambiguous messages regarding legal and moral requirements to protect health and safety during handling as well as for return and reuse.

  • Prospective entrants should find out more and register online at www.pasasa.org.

  • The deadline for registering your intent to enter has been extended to 30 June 2006.

  • Registered entrants will be sent an entry form with detailed terms and conditions as well as guidelines for submitting their designs.

  • Entrants will have until 1 August, 2006 to submit their designs and the winner will be announced in September 2006.

  • The panel of judges will be chaired by Mr Keith Pearson, the chairman of the World Packaging Organisation and the Institute of Packaging South Africa.
