The Solar Water Heating Division (SWHD) of the Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA) recently elected its new executive committee. This at a time of heightened activity within the solar water heating industry with the announcement earlier this year of increased rebates from Eskom for installation of approved solar water heating systems.
The division held a planning session in February at which the urgent need to shift from an organisation staffed largely by volunteers to a professional organisation with dedicated staff was highlighted. Improved communications, regional representation and the introduction of a new membership structure are some of the initiatives that the SWHD will be giving impetus to this year. The division is also currently recruiting a full time manager who will be answerable to the Executive Committee made up of representatives from the solar water heating industry. “With so many new entrants to the solar water heating market, it is essential that standards in the manufacture, installation and maintenance of solar hot water systems are maintained” says Dylan Tudor Jones, the Chairman of the SWHD Executive Committee. “The SESSA Solar Water Heating Division is well placed to ensure this, offering support to the industry as well as consumers by way of its solar water heating ombudsman” he adds. Members of the division are required to abide by a strict Solar Water Heating Code of Conduct to assist in co-operating, developing, instituting, maintaining and promoting good practice within the industry. The Code applies to importers, manufacturers, distributors and installers within the division. The division's parent body, SESSA, was established in 1977 and is dedicated to the promotion of renewable and energy efficiency development. |
