2006 NuRa: A Success Story for Rural Energy Service Delivery
The South African Government initiative, conceived in 1999, to provide alternate energy in the form of solar home systems to over 300 000 rural households was viewed by many as a unique approach to solving rural energy needs. Others saw this as a pipe dream that would never realize it’s potential. Since then the programme has had many ups and downs. This paper looks at the programme as a whole but more specifically at NuRa (Pty) Ltd, one of the appointed concession companies, and how it has slowly gone about turning Government’s dream of universal access to clean energy into a reality. Conclusions are drawn and suggestions on the way forward are proposed.

2006 Hub for Postgraduate Programme in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies awarded to Stellenbosch University - 5 June 2006
Stellenbosch University has been awarded the responsibility to act as the hub of a Postgraduate Programme in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies by the newly formed South African National Energy Research Institute (SANERI), a division of the Central Energy Fund (CEF). The hub will be supplemented by a number of research chairs forming the spokes of a hub and spoke model.
2006 Solar Thermal Market grows 10 times faster than overall economy - 24 May 2006
This year’s edition of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme’s, Solar Heat Worldwide: Markets and Contributions to the Energy Supply 2004, reports that the solar thermal sector has become a market leader in the past five years, growing 10 times faster than the overall economy. The annual collector yield (energy produced) in 2004 was 58,117 GWh – an oil equivalent of 9.3 billion liters and annual avoidance of 25.4 million tons of CO2 emissions.
2006 Inter Solar 2006
Inter Solar 2006, Europe’s largest trade fair for solar technology, was held in Freiburg Germany from 22 – 24 June. There were 454 exhibitors in 26,000 m² of show area covering most aspects of solar energy. The one disappointing area was battery technology, but when you evaluate that the German market is the largest PV market and it’s nearly all grid connected (±98%) then batteries are not needed unlike most of the African market which uses battery storage.
